Nick Williams was standing outside earlier this week—wearing shorts and a t-shirt—when he took the call that changed his life.

“I was speaking to my agent,” Williams recalled. “It was probably 30-degrees and I couldn’t feel anything. I was elated.”

Williams, an undrafted free agent wide receiver/returner out of UConn, was promoted Monday from the practice squad.

“I’m super-excited and thankful for the opportunity,” Williams said Wednesday. “When I was put on practice squad, my goal was to get called up as fast as possible. And that was the approach I took at practice.”

Williams said he hasn’t been told for sure whether he’ll suit up Sunday in Philadelphia. But given the state of the Redskins’ return game—particularly on punts—it would be major a surprise if he didn't.

“Sometimes when the return game is going really well, it looks like it’s all the returner and it’s really the 10 guys in front of him,” Williams said. “And sometimes when it’s not going so well, it looks like it’s the returner is making mistakes. It’s really a group effort.”

Williams is also a native of East Windsor, N.J., so it’s possible he’ll make his NFL debut 45-minutes from his hometown. Ticket requests are already pouring in, he joked.

“I hope that I’m dressed for the game,” Williams said with a smile.

Williams, who would line up as a slot receiver on offense if he’s used in that capacity on Sunday, also said that he feels fortunate to have been mentored by Santana Moss. Williams said his family cheers for the Jets, so he watched Moss a lot as a youngster.

“Firstly, Santana is the man,” Williams said. “He’s a great player and great slot receiver and someone I grew up watching. …Santana has been great to me ever since I got here. He’s shown my weaknesses, my strengths. He’s taken me under his wing, off the field as well. It’s been unreal, a blessing to have a guy like that who’s willing to just unfold all of his knowledge to you. It’s been incredible.”
