Redskins camp will start with RG3

Although Robert Griffin III has been cleared to participate in training camp, the Redskins are unlikely to have him play in any preseason games, according to a report.

Adam Schefter of ESPN said that sources who know coach Mike Shanahan “expressed pessimism Griffin would return in the preseason.” Schefter also said that the Redskins organization does not want to subject Griffin to any hits this summer.

Should this decision stick, it would be applauded by many who see playing the team’s star player and the future of the franchise in the preseason as an unnecessary risk. Others believe that as a second-year NFL quarterback Griffin could benefit from some preseason playing time.

Griffin will address the media on Wednesday from the team’s training camp facility in Richmond and Shanahan will speak on Thursday. The preseason starts August 9 in Tennessee.
