Quarterback Robert Griffin III and defensive linemen Barry Cofield and Stephen Bowen were voted as captains, Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan said.
Those three will join tackle Trent Williams, linebacker London Fletcher and special teams ace Lorenzo Alexander, who were voted captains during the preseason.
Cofield and Bowen tied in a vote of the players this week, Shanahan said. As a result, the Redskins will send six players to midfield for the pregame coin flip.
“Usually we’ve had five,” Shanahan said. “This is my first time with six. But because of the tie, I felt it was important for both Barry and Stephen to be out there."
"We'll be well represented,” the coach cracked.
Shanahan has traditionally held two votes per season for captains. The second, he said, is because he wants free agent acquisitions and rookies, such as Griffin, to get the chance to prove themselves to their teammates.
“I think it’s a great honor,” Shanahan said. “If you voted right away, it would be very hard to vote a rookie to be your captain. But midway through the season they say, ‘Hey, he’s our leader.’”
Shanahan also said he couldn’t recall another rookie captain during his 19 seasons.
