Pierre Garçon did not practice on Thursday, while safety Brandon Meriweather and linebacker Perry Riley were limited in their participation, Coach Mike Shananan said.

Garçon (foot) would seem to be almost certain to miss Sunday’s game against Carolina, while the status of Meriweather (knee) and Riley (hamstring) have not been determined. Shanahan did, however, say on Wednesday that Meriweather is a “long shot” to suit up against the Panthers.

“Is there a chance, yeah, there’s a chance,” Shanahan said of Meriweather on Thursday. The coach also said he’s seen improvement with Riley, who was injured late in the loss to Pittsburgh.

There were no new injuries to report.

Some other highlights from the coach’s news conference:

--Shanahan on whether he had heard from the league regarding any potential punishment for DeAngelo Hall: “I haven’t heard a thing.” Asked if no news is good news, Shanahan added: “Not really. I’ve been surprised before.”

--Shanahan on the job right tackle Tyler Polumbus has done in place of Jammal Brown: “Tyler is an overachiever to start with. He’s very sharp, very proud, very accountable. He’s played at a very high level this season. He’s been a big plus for us.”

--Asked what the defense will need to do to turn things around in the second half of the season, Shanahan said: “It’s your veterans playing their best football, knowing that have to play their best football in the second half of the season. This is where normally football teams are taken over by their veterans. You can go one direction or the other. You either step up or shut up. ”

--Shanahan on Chris Cooley’s second week back: “He’s a little bit more comfortable with the pads on, doing some hitting, different things you haven’t done in a long time. You can really see him feeling more comfortable.”
