Shanahan wants to keep 49ers away from 'what they do best'

The never-ending drama that is the relationship between Mike Shanahan and Robert Griffin III took another turn Sunday morning.

NFL Network’s Mike Silver reported that the relationship between coach and quarterback is deteriorating. Silver also said that Griffin is “perceived as insecure” by some at Redskins Park and that he asked the coaching staff to stop showing his negative plays during film sessions.

“At Baylor, bad plays of his were not shown in meetings at times,” Silver said during GameDay Morning. “I am told by someone familiar with the situation that he asked the Redskins to do the same, and that request was rebuffed.”

Reached at Redskins Park shortly after Silver's report aired, Shanahan told CSNWashington.com that Griffin never made such a request.

“Robert did not request that I not show negative plays,” Shanahan said. “Completely false. No truth that he asked me to do that.”

Although questions about the relationship between Shanahan and Griffin began 11 months ago in the aftermath of the quarterback’s devastating knee injury and continued into training camp, this latest episode seems to stem from the controversial comments Griffin made in Philadelphia a week ago.

After the Redskins’ 24-16 loss at Lincoln Financial Field, Griffin said, “They kind of knew what was coming before it was coming, and that was disheartening.”

Griffin later explained he was simply attempting to pay the Eagles a compliment, not call out his coaches’ game plan. Still, he felt the need to meet with offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan on Monday to clear the air.

“You guys make a big deal of it, and understandably so,” the younger Shanahan said Thursday. “What helped me was that Robert did come in. I didn’t ask him to. He came in and talked to me on Monday about it and tried to clear it up with me and explain to me what he meant to say. Once I heard him and talked to him, I was fine with it."
