Shanahan: RG3 is clearly our starting quarterback
Attempting to spike a potential quarterback controversy, Mike Shanahan said that Robert Griffin III is still on top of the depth chart.
“Robert is clearly our starting quarterback,” Shanahan said more than once during his Monday press conference.
The questions came up due to the solid performance by Kirk Cousins, who nearly led the Redskins to a win over Atlanta that would have broken their five-game losing streak. Cousins is playing in place of Griffin, who has been shut down for the rest of the season.

Shanahan did say that he hoped that Griffin would respond to Cousins’ play. He said that he encourages “legitimate competition at every position” to push the starters to perform better.
If Cousins plays well for the remaining two games it could raise the possibility of a quarterback controversy in 2014. But we are a long way from that happening.
First, it’s far from certain that Cousins will be a member of the team next year. If he continues to play well he could end up being traded for a draft pick.

And it’s seems to be even further from certain that Shanahan will be back to decide who starts at quarterback next season.
But, for the time being, Griffin is the starting QB even though he’s not starting or even playing at all.
