Fred Davis and Mike Shanahan have discussed why the veteran tight end was deactivated for Sunday’s game, the Redskins’ head coach said Thursday.

“Yeah, I’ve talked to Fred the last couple of weeks, sat down with him, especially when he was inactive,” Shanahan said. “[I told him] what it takes to play in this league. Responsibilities. Accountabilities. Why people do play, why they don’t.”

On Tuesday, Davis said in a radio interview that he had not spoken to Shanahan about his situation in "three or four" weeks. It was also reported this week that the Redskins are open to the possibility of trading Davis, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent after the season.

Asked what he told Davis in their talks, Shanahan declined to be specific.

“I’m not going to go through it,” he said. “I sat down with Fred and told him why he wasn’t dressing and if he wanted to dress, what he had to do.”
