The Saints cleared up some much-needed salary cap money by releasing three players and saying that they won’t make a contract offer to a pending free agent. Let’s take a look at these four players and see if they could be free agent targets for the Redskins.
DE Will Smith—This is an easy “no” even though there is a connection to the Redskins; Jim Haslett was the head coach when the Saints drafted Smith out of Ohio State in the first round in 2004. But Smith is a 4-3 defensive end and at his age (33 before the season starts) his not going to learn to play outside linebacker.

CB Jabari Greer—He played pretty well as the Saints’ starting corner last year until he suffered a torn ACL in a game in November. The Redskins won’t sign a 32-year-old corner who may not be ready for training camp.
S Roman Harper—Safety is a big need for the Redskins and Harper, 31, could be a stopgap at strong safety, someone who can hold down the fort while the team sees what it has in Phillip Thomas. They need to be careful, however as Harper missed seven games with a knee injury last year.
LB Jonathan Vilma—Knee problems derailed his 2013 season as he spent all but one game on injured reserve. Although he might be a short-term solution at inside linebacker he can’t stay on the field. He hasn’t played a 16-game season since 2010.
