At 4 p.m., 16 players who were on the Redskins’ roster last season are scheduled to hit the open market. Some will eventually be re-signed by the team. But many others won’t.

Here’s a rundown of the pending free agents and their prospects for staying (or going):

Position/Name: ILB/Nick Barnett

Age: 32

2013 cap hit: $555,000

Comment: Saw only 70 snaps on defense in nine games. Team needs a younger player who can also make a positive impact on special teams.

Position/Name: CB/E.J. Biggers

Age: 26

2013 cap hit: $1.5 million

Comment: Young, versatile and possesses upside when used properly. Skins have reportedly shown interest in retaining him as a No. 4 corner.

Position/Name: WR/Dezmon Briscoe

Age: 24

2013 cap hit: $630,000

Comment: Has good size (6-2, 210) but did not play in 2013 due to a shoulder injury. If he’s retained, he’ll have to compete for a spot.

Position/Name: TE/Fred Davis

Age: 28

2013 cap hit: $2.5 million

Comment: Managed only seven receptions, is suspended indefinitely by the NFL and was arrested for DUI in February. Can’t see a scenario where he stays.

Position/Name: S/Reed Doughty

Age: 31

2013 cap hit: $1.5 million

Comment: Solid reserve and good on special teams, where he serves as captain. Told CSNWashington.com last week he wants to stay but expects to hit market.

Position/Name: ILB London Fletcher

Age: 38

2013 cap hit: $6.2 million

Comment: The 16-year veteran said late last season that he intends to retire. His departure leaves a huge void in middle of Skins’ defense.

Position/Name: QB Rex Grossman

Age: 33

2013 cap hit: $575,000

Comment: Hasn’t played a snap in two seasons. Even in the unlikely event Kirk Cousins gets traded, it’s tough to see him returning.

Position/Name: OLB Rob Jackson

Age: 28

2013 cap hit: $1.057 million

Comment: A four-game suspension to start the season led to a decline in production. Wants to be a starter; might have to happen elsewhere.

Position/Name: ILB Bryan Kehl

Age: 29

2013 cap hit: $740,000

Comment: Reserve who excels on special teams. Coming off a torn ACL. Source says he’s far ahead of schedule in recovery. Health will be key to returning.

Position/Name: S/Brandon Meriweather

Age: 30

2013 cap hit: $1.579 million

Comment: Can be a difference-maker when on the field. Has played in 14 out of 28 regular season games for Skins due to injury and/or suspension. Team has inquired about upgrades at the position.

Position/Name: WR/Josh Morgan

Age: 28

2013 cap hit: $5.1 million

Comment: After a solid 2012 with his hometown team, Morgan landed in Mike Shanahan’s doghouse and finished with only 20 receptions for 214 yards last season. Wants to return but a reunion seems unlikely at this point.

Position/Name: WR/Santana Moss

Age: 34

2013 cap hit: $4.01 million

Comment: Has lost a step and last season struggled with drops. But he can still help in spots and is a good player to have in the locker room to mentor young players. Could return at a reduced rate.

Position/Name: OLB Brian Orakpo

Age: 27

2013 cap hit: $5.1 million

Comment: By using their non-exclusive franchise tag on Orakpo, the Redskins have virtually ensured that he’ll return in 2014. If he signs elsewhere, the team will be entitled to two first round picks as compensation. Orakpo has until July 15th to negotiate a long-term extension with the Skins. If one can’t be reached, he’ll play for the franchise tag amount of $11.5 million.

Position/Name: OLB/Darryl Tapp

Age: 29

2013 cap hit: $580,000

Comment: Only played 86 snaps on defense, but proved to be solid against the run. Would be good to keep around as a backup.

Position/Name: C/J.D. Walton

Age: 26

2013 cap hit: $155,647

Comment: A former teammate of Robert Griffin III at Baylor, he claimed off waivers from Denver last season but never suited up. Hasn’t played since breaking his ankle early in the 2012 season. Could be an inexpensive alternative to Will Montgomery.

Position/Name: CB/Josh Wilson

Age: 29

2013 cap hit: $3.33 million

Comment: Had his moments last season—both good and bad. Recent buzz about the Skins being in market for a veteran cornerback appear to be bad news for the Upper Marlboro native.
