Week 5 bye...Too soon or just right?

There were mixed feelings at Redskins Park about the timing of this season’s bye week.

Linebacker Brian Orakpo told reporters after Sunday’s 24-14 victory in Oakland, “I hate early byes” and it came "way too early." For one, he said, taking a break now halts the momentum the team gained by picking up its first victory of the season.

Coach Mike Shanahan, though, took the opposite position, saying on Monday that the timing is perfect for two reasons: A few key players have suffered early dings and it affords the team a chance to press the reset button after a 1-3 start.

I tend to agree with Shanahan on this one.

It gives a bunch of guys with minor injuries – Alfred Morris (ribs), Logan Paulsen (knee), Jordan Reed (quad) and Brandon Jenkins (ankle), to name a few – a chance to rest up and get treatment.

It’s also like a coach calling a timeout after a poor start in a game. Everyone can come to the sideline, catch their breath and regroup before things spiral out of control. And considering the importance of the Redskins’ next game – at the Cowboys, with first place in the NFC East possibly on the line – the extra week to prepare doesn’t hurt, either. "We can come back healthy and we know where we’re at in the NFC East and start the season all over again,” Shanahan said.

What are you thoughts on the Week 5 bye? Too early? Or just right?
