The matchup: Towson (16-13, 11-5 CAA) at George Mason (17-11, 10-6), 7 p.m. on CSN-plus
Last meeting: Sherrod Wright scored 24 points and Bryon Allen returned to the starting lineup with 16 points as the Patriots won 77-67 at Towson on Jan. 23 for their 20th straight over the Tigers.
At stake: The Patriots, currently a game behind Towson and Delaware in the CAA standings, must win to maintain hopes of finishing in second. George Mason, also trying to build momentum for the upcoming conference tournament, closes the regular season at Delaware on March 2. The Tigers, not eligible for the postseason, have a very outside of tying league-leading Northeastern should they win their final two regular season games and the Huskies drop theirs.
Freshman success: George Mason snapped a three-game home losing skid with 60-58 triumph over William & Mary on Saturday, rallying from a 13-point second half deficit behind five 3-pointers from freshman guard Patrick Holloway. Towson reached 16 wins for the first time since the 1995-96 season with Saturday's72-71 over Drexel as freshman Jerome Hairston had 20 points. On Monday the CAA named Hairston and Holloway Co-Rookies of the Week.
Streaking: While the Patriots look to maintain their historical dominance over the Tigers, they are also seeking their first three-game winning streak in a month. Since their three-game losing streak last month -- which included the setback to George Mason -- the Tigers have gone 6-1.
Star watch: Wright's 24-point outburst against the Tigers is one of 11 games with at least 20 points this season for the junior guard, though none of come in the last six games. Except for tallying 19 points against Georgia State, the Patriots top scorer has not produced more than 12 points in that span, including six on 3 of 12 shooting against William & Mary. Towson's Jerrelle Benimon remains one of if the not the leading contender for CAA Player of the Year, averaging 16.7 points and 11.2 rebounds. The former Georgetown transfer ranks second nationally with 18 double-doubles and fourth in rebounding.
