Alex Ovechkin could be the star of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, and he is excited to serve as a host for the winter games in his home country. On Monday, Ovi spoke with The Today Show about what to expect as the world descends on Sochi.

Most pressing for many Americans about the Sochi Olympics are security concerns as Russia battles against extremist Muslim terrorists. Ovechkin assured viewers he expects no problems during the Games.

"I don't think it's going to be dangerous. I'm sure everything is going to be fine," Ovechkin said. "Everybody [is] going to have a good time."

The Today Show spoke with some of the people closest to Ovechkin, including his fiance and tennis star Maria Kirilenko. She described Ovi the way many Caps fans would: "He's a big kid."

Ovechkin seems touched to have the Olympics in his come country, and Russians seem proud of their star hockey player. Ovi was the first person to run with the Olympic flame on its journey to Sochi, and knows how important the games are to his countrymen.

"It's a big honor for me, my country."
