Caps look to bounce back after loss to Dallas

The Capitals’ extended family grew by one early Tuesday when Nicklas Backstrom’s girlfriend, Liza Berg, gave birth to a baby girl, two days past the expected due date.

“I don’t know if we show it as much [as the wives and girlfriends], but we’re definitely excited for him,” Caps teammate Troy Brouwer said. “We see how excited he is to be a dad and how much he already loved the little one even before [she] was born.”

Backstrom skipped Tuesday’s practice and was replaced by Michael Latta, who was recalled from Hershey and skated on the Caps’ top line with Alex Ovechkin and Marcus Johansson.

The Caps made room for Latta who carries a cap hit of $590,833, by placing defenseman Jack Hillen [$700,000] on the team’s long-term injury list. Hillen will miss the next 4-6 months with a fractured right tibial plateau. The Caps are still trying to decide whether to keep right-handed Steve Oleksy on a third defense pairing with Connor Carrick, or replace him with Alex Urbom, who shoots left.

The Caps’ lines and defensive pairings today looked like this:

Forward Lines

Marcus Johansson – Michael Latta – Alex Ovechkin

Brooks Laich – Mikhail Grabovski – Troy Brouwer

Jason Chimera – Eric Fehr – Joel Ward

Marty Erat – Jay Beagle – Tom Wilson

Defense Pairings

Karl Alzner – Mike Green

John Erskine – John Carlson

Alex Urbom/Steve Oleksy – Connor Carrick

Goaltenders

Braden Holtby – Michal Neuvirth
