Looking for some added toughness at the forward position, the Caps have claimed 6-foot, 215-pound left wing Aaron Volpatti from the Vancouver Canucks.

Volpatti, 27, has recorded one goal and 28 penalty minutes in 16 games with Vancouver this season.

He was second on the Canucks with 42 hits and has had four fighting majors.

A native of Revelstoke, British Columbia, Volpatti has played in 54 career NHL games with the Canucks, recording three goals, one assist and 81 penalty minutes.

Volpatti is expected to practice with the Capitals Friday at Kettler, and he could take Wojtek Wolski's place in the lineup. Wolski has gone 10 straight games without a point and 11 straight without a goal

In 61 career games in the AHL Volpatti recorded three goals and 10 assists, along with 91 penalty minutes.

He spent four seasons playing for Brown University in the NCAA and was named to the ECAC All-Academic team his first three seasons before being named team captain for his senior season.

Volpatti was originally signed as an un-drafted free agent by Vancouver on March 22, 2010.
