Caps fall in Baltimore Hockey Classic
BALTIMORE -- Instant analysis of the Capitals’ 3-2 preseason loss to the Boston Bruins Tuesday night in the second Baltimore Hockey Classic at 1st Mariner Arena:
Game in a nutshell: Bruins forward Carter Camper scored in the ninth round of the shootout to give the Bruins the shootout win. Caps rookie prospect Tom Wilson converted a cross-ice feed from Nathan Walker late in the first period and Casey Wellman scored late in the second period.
Arena issues: The game was delayed twice in the opening two periods because of issues with the glass in the corners of the rink. A metal stanchion holding the glass together fell to the ice in the first period, but it was a broken pane of glass near the end of the second period that had fans ooh-ing and aah-ing – especially when the glass narrowly missed Alex Ovechkin.
Ovechkin, who turned 28 on Tuesday, slammed into the glass with Bruins defenseman Chris Castro and the pane of glass broke in half when it hit the ice. The teams retreated to their locker rooms with 4 minutes remaining in the second period, played those 4 minutes when they returned to the ice, then switched sides for the third period.
Because of the issues it will be interesting to see if the Caps will return to the 51-year-old arena next year.
Holtby shutout: Playing in his second preseason game, Caps goalie Braden Holtby turned aside all 12 shots he faced before leaving midway through the second period. Philip Grubauer took over from there and allowed two goals on 16 shots.
Loose pucks: Australian-born left wing Nathan Walker set up Wilson’s first-period goal with a nice feed and showed a burst of speed to draw a penalty shot early in the third period. Walker was stopped by Bruins goalie prospect Niklas Svedberg on his penalty shot attempt.
Look ahead: The Caps have a scheduled day off on Wednesday, but forwards Brooks Laich [left hip flexor] and Mikhail Grabovski are expected to skate. Grabovski will practice with Team A on Thursday and could see his first preseason action Friday night at Verizon Center.
