The Capitals’ depth at right wing took a hit on Wednesday when the team’s website revealed that 20-year-old Tom Wilson suffered an ankle injury in a recent fall near his offseason home in Toronto.

The extent of the injury was not immediately known, but a Capitals spokesman said Wilson was being evaluated by a doctor in Toronto and that the Caps’ medical staff is being kept informed of the injury.

A team spokesman also said that contrary to reports, Wilson did not suffer the injury while skateboarding.

The Capitals are expected to provide an update on Wilson’s injury in the coming days. A phone call to Wilson’s agent went unreturned.

Wilson played in all 82 games for the Capitals last season, recording three goals, seven assists and 151 penalty minutes, ranking seventh in the NHL in penalty minutes.

Wilson was not expected to participate in the Caps’ development camp, which begins on Monday at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. The Capitals’ training camp is scheduled to begin on Sept. 18.
