If the Capitals are going to find a way to get into the playoffs for a seventh straight season they are going to need to do it without defenseman Mike Green.

Injured on a hit late in the first period of the Caps’ 4-3 shootout win over New York Islanders, Green did not practice with the team at Kettler Capitals Iceplex and head coach Adam Oates said he will not play in either of the Caps’ games against the St. Louis Blues and Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday and Thursday.

Oates said Green will be re-evaluated when the team returns on Friday.

With just four games remaining in the regular season the Capitals need to finish with four straight wins and hope the Columbus Blue Jackets, New Jersey Devils and Toronto Maple Leafs stumble down the stretch to have any chance to get into the post-season.

With defensemen Jack Hillen and Patrick Wey already sidelined with upper body injuries, Oates said rookie Connor Carrick “quite possibly” would return to the lineup for the first time since March 16.

Carrick, 19, practiced alongside Dmitry Orlov on a second defense pairing, leaving AHL veterans Julien Brouillette and Tyson Srrachan as the Caps’ third pairing.

“Hopefully the rest makes him feel a little fresher because the game is hard,” Oates said of Carrick. “He’s had a chance to watch from the [press box] and hopefully, mentally he’s a little fresher and clearer.”
