For goaltender Braden Holtby and defenseman Dmitry Orlov, this was supposed to be their breakout season for the Capitals.

But with Saturdays NHL lockout looming, the two players were among the 21 the Capitals assigned to the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League on Friday. The Bears open their training camp Sept. 30.

Others assigned to the Bears were forwards Mike Carman, Stanislav Galiev, Garrett Mitchell, Danick Paquette, Mattias Sjogren, Matt Clackson, Zach Hamill, Ryan Potulny and Ryan Stoa; defensemen Brett Flemming, Tomas Kundratek, Cameron Schilling, Dustin Stevenson, Kevin Marshall, Patrick McNeill and Garrett Stafford; and goaltenders Brandon Anderson, Philipp Grubauer, and Dany Sabourin.

In addition, the Caps loaned forward Tom Wilson to Plymouth of the Ontario Hockey League.
The 11-time Calder Cup champion Hershey Bears will celebrate their 75th AHL season in 2012-13.
