“I have made a decision to break up our engagement,” Kirilenko, 27, said in a statement to R-Sport. “There are a lot of reasons, but I wouldn’t want to go in detail.
“I’ll say just that our relationship is over, but I respect Sasha as a person and an athlete and sincerely wish him athletic success in the future.
“I’m currently concentrating on preparing for my tennis tournaments and I hope that soon I’ll be able to please my fans with news about my success as an athlete and not just in my personal life.”
A Capitals spokesperson said Ovechkin, 28, would not comment on Kirilenko’s statement, saying it is “a private matter.”
Ovechkin and Kirilenko met at the U.S. Open in New York and Ovechkin talked to me about their relationship prior to the 2012-13 season. They dated for close to two years before getting engaged on New Year’s eve, just before the start of 2013, and shared more about their relationship with CSN's Jill Sorenson.
Asked occasionally about his wedding plans last season, Ovechkin never revealed a date for a potential wedding day.
Ovechkin last tweeted an Instagram photo of himself and Kirilenko on June 10. Later than month he attended the NHL Awards Ceremony, where he accepted his second straight Rocket Richard Trophy after recording a league-high 51 goals.
