After seeing his Capitals teammates score first for their countries on Thursday morning, perhaps Martin Erat took note. He notched the Czech Republic's first goal on Friday in a 4-2 win over Latvia. The Czechs are now 1-1 in Group C Olympic action.
Both Erat and the Czechs rebounded from an unfortunate showing in the team's opener on Wednesday morning against Sweden. They are now set up for a big game against Switzerland on Saturday afternoon.
--Erat's goal came 10:10 into the first period on netminder Kristers Gudlevskis, it was assisted by David Krejci and Ales Hemsky. Erat has already matched his season goals total in the NHL with the Capitals, as in the team's final game before the break he had an open netter against the New Jersey Devils. This was the first goal he's scored on a goalie in a game since April 26, 2013 in the Capitals' win over the Toronto Maple Leafs.
--Erat and his teammates were much more aggressive vs. Latvia than they were just two days ago against Sweden. Erat recorded four shots on goal in just 13:15 of ice time and the Czechs outshot Latvia 39-20 overall. They had 16 shots on goal in the first period and 15 in the second, taking a more conservative approach in the third period with a two-goal lead.
