In the past six days, seven players and one draft pick have been exchanged between four NHL teams.

Those deals might be just the sparks that sets off a wildfire of trade activity leading into Sunday’s NHL draft at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. [3 p.m. NBC Sports Network].

With Vinny Lecavalier, Danny Briere and Ilya Bryzgaov already on the market as compliance buyouts and Brad Richards likely to be among the big names joining them, Capitals general manager George McPhee said he expects teams to be very creative in the days and hours leading up to the one-day, seven-round draft.

“Yes, those are the discussions that are going on now with other clubs,” McPhee said earlier this week.

“What do you want to do? How do you want to do it? Does this fit for you if it fits for us? L.A. and Toronto did something that makes sense for both clubs. We’ll talk to everybody and see where it goes.”

The Kings sent backup goaltender Jonathan Bernier to the Maple Leafs for forward Matt Frattin, goalie Ben Scrivens and a second-round pick. In next year’s draft. On Thursday, the Avalanche acquired forward Alex Tanguay and defenseman Cory Sarich from the Flames for forward David Jones and defenseman Shane O’Brien.

The Flames had been rumored to have interest in Caps backup netminder Michal Neuvirth, but McPhee quashed that speculation by saying he has no interest in trading Neuvirth.

That doesn’t mean McPhee isn’t working on a draft day brew that could have a significant impact on the 2013-14 Capitals. McPhee has made a draft day deal in four of the last five years and overall the Caps have made 18 trades on draft day.
