It was inevitable, considering the lack of progress in negotiations.
With Thursday’s deadline to save a full 82-game season in the rear view mirror and no talks scheduled, the NHL has cancelled all regular season games through the month of November.
That brings the total of NHL games canceled to 326, roughly a quarter of the season. Included in the cancellation of games is the inaugural Thanksgiving Classic game between the Bruins and Rangers. That Nov. 23 game would have been the start of NBC’s national broadcast schedule.
The Jan. 1 Winter Classic, perhaps the final carrot in negotiations between the owners and players, is still alive, although many believe that if an agreement is not in place by Nov. 20, that signature event will be wiped away as well.
