NHL realignment that will reunite the Capitals in a division with the Penguins, Flyers and Rangers took another step toward reality on Thursday when the NHL Players’ Association gave its approval.

“After discussions with the Executive Board, the NHLPA has given consent to realignment, to be re-evaluated following the 2014-15 season.” NHLPA executive director Don Fehr said in a statement.

The NHL Board of Governors needs to give its approval to finalize the changes, but that appears to be a formality.

Under the proposal, beginning next season, the Caps would play in an Atlantic Division that looks like this:

  • Capitals
  • Penguins
  • Flyers
  • Rangers
  • Devils
  • Islanders
  • Hurricanes
  • Blue Jackets

The Eastern Conference Central Division would look like this:

  • Bruins
  • Sabres
  • Red Wings
  • Canadiens
  • Senators
  • Maple Leafs
  • Panthers
  • Tampa Bay

In the West, the Midwest Division would look like this:

  • Blackhawks
  • Avalanche
  • Stars
  • Wild
  • Predators
  • Blues
  • Jets

And the Pacific Division would look like this:

  • Ducks
  • Flames
  • Oilers
  • Kings
  • Coyotes
  • Sharks
  • Canucks
