Following an informal workout with teammates on Tuesday at Kettler Capitals Iceplex, Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin spoke with the Washington media for about 15 minutes on Tuesday.

Here are a few highlights, with more to follow:

On being courted to play for Dynamo Moscow of the KHL:

“To be honest with you it’s a kind of question and the answer is like, I’m here. I have a contract. I was really enjoyable to hear the president and GM of Dynamo wants me to sign. I love Dynamo. Like, it was my first team and I played there when there was a lockout. But I have a contract, so I have to wait here. I respect my teammates, I respect my fans and all that kind of stuff. I’m staying here. I’m with you right now.”

On Ilya Kovalchuk’s decision to play in the KHL:

“I respect every player. They have their own life. He decided to go back and I respect his decision. If somebody says I’m going back or I’m not going back I still going to respect your decision if it’s not stupid. I think it’s not stupid. He explained why. You can say bad things about him or good things about him. The pressure is on him because he’s Russian, that’s why. Why are some American guys go to the KHL and after like two months they say, ‘OK I want to cancel my contract and go back.’ Why nobody put pressure on them? It’s a different situation, of course [Kovalchuk] is a bigger player than somebody else. Of course somebody is not happy about it ,but that’s life.”

On his left foot, which was broken during last year’s playoffs:

“I’m healthy, 100 percent. But if you take my physicality it’s probably like 70 percent, 75 percent. The most important thing is to be ready for the first game.”

On the annual question of whether the Caps can win the Stanley Cup:

“Every year, and every year, yes. Mentally I think we’re ready. We’re going to have a full year. Everybody knows the system much better than last year. We’re going to have more confidence because everybody knows what to expect from each other sand it’s going to happen.”
