The Capitals announced today that Alex Ovechkin, Alexander Semin and Nicklas Backstrom will play in the 2012 IIHF World Championship. Ovi and Semin will represent Russia while Backstrom represents Sweden.
The Worlds began on May 4th, and run through May 20th.
Ovi lead the Caps in scoring this season with 65 points over 78 games. The Russian finished the postseason with nine points in 14 games. He's the first NHL player to score at least 30 goals in his first 50 playoff games since 1997.
Semin was second in scoring for Washington with 54 points. This will be his sixth World Championship. He was gold in 2008, silver in 2010 and bronze in 2005.
Backstrom finished fifth in points for the Caps despite only playing 42 games after suffering a concussion. He finished the postseason with eight points.
