Pregame primer: Caps face Devils without Ovi

News and notes as the Capitals [22-20-8, 52 points] visit the New Jersey Devils [21-19-11] tonight at Prudential Center [7 p.m., CSN]:

No Ovi: The Capitals will be without Alex Ovechkin [groin strain] for the second straight game and fourth time this season. They are 2-1 without him this season and 13-9-2 without him during his nine-year NHL career.

Road trippin’: The Caps are 8-11-4 on the road this season. Tonight marks the start of a five-game road trip. The Devils are 11-6-6 at home.

He’s got the moves like: Jaromir Jagr will turn 42 next month but that hasn’t stopped him from leading the Devils in scoring with 40 points [16 goals, 24 assists] in 51 games. Jagr ranks seventh on the NHL’s all-time list with 697 goals. He’s 11 goals behind Mike Gartner. In 71 career games against the Caps he has 30 goals and 58 assists for 88 points.

Trending: Four of the last seven meetings between the teams have gone into overtime. The Devils beat the Caps 5-4 in overtime the last time the teams met in D.C. on Dec. 21. Both teams are 13-0-2 when leading after two periods. The Caps are 8-6 in shootouts this season. The Devils are 0-8. The Devils have outscored opponents 50-42 in third periods this season. The Caps have been outscored 47-38. The Caps are 5-1-3 in the first end of back-to-back games.

Isn’t that special: The Caps rank second in the NHL on the power play but are 1-for-21 in their last seven games. They’ve also allowed 10 power-play goals in their last 10 games, falling to 21st in the NHL. The Devils rank 9th on the power play and second on the penalty kill, allowing two power-play goals in their last seven.

Dad’s night: The Capitals have invited players’ fathers on the first part of this road trip. The dads will join the team on its trip to Montreal, then return to D.C. with their sons late Saturday night. Mikhail Grabovski’s 86-year-old grandfather from Belarus is on the trip with his grandson.

Chimmer’s 300th: Jason Chimera will be playing in his 300th game for the Caps. Chimera has 49 goals and 70 assists for 119 points in 299 games for Washington.
