Highlights: Caps 3, Rangers 2

Sudden thoughts and second thoughts as the Capitals reflect on Friday night’s 3-2 victory over the New York Rangers and turn their attention to the Buffalo Sabres [5 p.m. Sunday, CSN] :

Today’s schedule: The Caps have an 11 a.m. practice scheduled for Kettler Capitals Iceplex. We’ll have the Brooks Laich Watch in effect. Laich was scheduled to see a doctor on Friday to see which direction he should go as he continues to rehab from groin issues that have kept him out of 12 of the Caps’ last 13 games.

Where’s Ovi: Send out the search party. Alex Ovechkin has gone two games without a goal. Ovi still leads the NHL with 30 goals, six ahead of the Blues’ Alex Steen, but for the first time since Nov. 27-29 he’s gone two games without a goal. It wasn’t from a lack of trying Friday night. Ovechkin had a team-high seven shots on goal, with two more getting blocked and another missing the net. He also delivered a team-high five hits. Ovechkin has not gone three games without a goal this season.

He’s on fire: Nicklas Backstrom recorded a goal and an assist against the Rangers. It was his 13th multi-point game of the season. Backstrom has 17 points in his last eight games (4 goals, 13 assists).

Powerful: The Caps have scored 11 power-play goals in their last eight games and have 23 power-play goals at home this season, tops in the NHL..

Early dividends: The Caps are 13-5-0 this season when scoring first and 6-3-0 when leading after the first period. They improved to 12-0-2 when leading after the second period and are 11-5-4 in one-goal games.

Fehr play: Eric Fehr scored the game-winning goal in the third period and registered six shots on goal against the Rangers. He has a point in three consecutive games and five in his last six.

Greener pastures: Mike Green scored a power-play goal in the first period and has earned a point in three of his last four games.
