In 17 years on the job a general manager can make a lot of moves that shape a franchise. George McPhee made quite a few during his time with the Capitals.

We’ve compiled a subjective list of his best and worst trades. In future posts we’ll break down his best and worst free-agent signings and drafts.

Dec. 11, 2000: Caps acquire Dmitri Kristich from Toronto for third-round pick in 2001 [Brendan Bell].

June 12, 2002: Caps acquire 13th overall pick [Alexander Semin] from Dallas in exchange for first- and second-round picks [Martin Vagner, Marius Holtet] in 2002 and a sixth-round pick [Francis Wathier] in 2003.

Feb. 18, 2004: Caps acquire Brooks Laich and second-round pick in 2005 [Chris Durand] from the Ottawa Senators for Peter Bondra.

Feb. 27, 2004: Caps acquire Tomas Fleischmann, first-round pick in 2004 [Mike Green] and fourth-round pick in 2006 [Luke Lynes] from Detroit for Robert Lang.

June 20, 2008: Caps acquire first-round pick in 2008 [John Carlson] from Philadelphia for Steve Eminger, third round pick in 2008 [Jacob DeSerres].

Honorable Mention

March 13, 2001: Caps acquire Trevor Linden, Dainius Zubrus and second-round pick in 2001 [Andreas Holmqvist] from Montreal for Jan Bulis, Richard Zednick and a first-rounder in 2001 [Alexander Perezhogin]. Linden was later traded to Vancouver for a first-rounder in 2002 [Boyd Gordon] and a third rounder in 2003 [Zach Stortini].

Feb. 28, 2011: Caps acquire Dennis Wideman from Florida for Jake Hausworth, third-round pick in 2011 [Jonathan Racine].

June 24, 2011: Caps acquire Troy Brouwer from Chicago for first-round pick in 2011 [Phillip Danault].
