OK, as you were watching Friday night’s 10-round shootout between the Capitals and Panthers, were you waiting for Adam Oates to start playing eenie-meenie-miney-mo?

In case you missed it, or simply lost track, the Capitals’ shooters in the shootout went like this:

  • Eric Fehr – goal
  • Alex Ovechkin – stopped
  • Nicklas Backstrom – goal
  • Mikhail Grabovski – goal
  • Troy Brouwer – stopped
  • Marty Erat – stopped
  • Marcus Johansson – stopped
  • Dmitry Orlov – stopped
  • Joel Ward – stopped
  • Jason Chimera - stopped

So, who would have been next on the Caps’ list?

“It was getting pretty thin,” Capitals coach Adam Oates said. “After watching Chimmer’s, Holts was next.”

That might have been worth the price of admission, seeing Braden Holtby skate in on Scott Clemmensen in full goalie gear.

As for the decision to give Orlov his first career shootout attempt, Oates said that was assistant coach Blaine “Foz” Forsythe’s call.

“He said he’s a good shootout guy,” Oates said with a laugh. “Foz is fired.”
