DMV Holiday Wish ListWhat's on the holiday wish lists for area teams this year? We asked local experts to give us gifting ideas that each team would be thrilled to find under their tree. -
Wizards: A Healthy John WallThe Wizards are no longer in need of their first win, but with a single digit win column and double digits in losses, they're desperate for the talents of John Wall. "Have you seen what they look like without him?" -asks CSNwashington.com's Brian Jackson Wall has been sidelined since September 28 when the team announced an injury to his left knee. Originally slated to miss eight weeks, Wizards fans now wonder if they'll see the former #1 pick on the court at all this season. Stocking Stuffer: A Closer "For 43 minutes the Wizards' pluck keeps them close. When opposing NBA defenses step up for the final five minutes, pluck can't offset Washington's lack of offensive closers." -Ben Standig, CSNwashington.com -
Capitals: A SeasonThe Capitals, along with the rest of the NHL, remain scattered far and wide as no progress is made in negotiations between owners and players. Now in month four of the lockout, fans wonder if they'll see their teams at all this season. "My wish? How about that NHL owners and players stop for a moment to think about the folks who line their pockets - the fans - and come together to settle their remaining disputes and get the puck dropped to start the season. Yeah, I know - it's easier to believe in Santa Claus at this point." -J.P., JapersRink.com "More than anything, Caps fans would like peace on earth and good will toward men named Gary Bettman and Don Fehr. And while Santa's at it, maybe he can drop off a nice, warm Snuggie for Roman Hamrlik to share with Troy Brouwer." -Chuck Gormley, CSNwashington.com Stocking stuffer: No more drama, just hockey. -
Terps: Good HealthAfter a close loss to last year's National Champs to start the season, the Terps have been rolling through their schedule thanks to an impressively deep roster. The only thing that could derail this train: injuries. "With this kind of depth Maryland is poised to prosper. From size and speed and shooting and smarts, coach Mark Turgeon's roster is covered at seemingly every position and need." -Ben Standig, CSNwashington.com -
Ravens: A Healthy Ray Lewis"Having Ray Lewis back in the huddle would be great for this team. While he isn't the player he once was, his intelligence on the field is an asset in itself - most times he knows what the offense is going to do as soon as they do," explains Derek Arnold from RussellStreetReport.com. "We haven't seen Ray and Terrell Suggs on the field together at all this season, and 55 and 52 being out there together would be a great gift for Ravens fans." Stocking Stuffer: One More Win "With just one more win, the Ravens can lock up the AFC North title for the second year in a row. While they won't have a bye in the playoffs, they'll at least be playing at home. Even with their home winning streak gone, it will still be a huge advantage if they don't have to go on the road for the first round. They've been one agonizing win away from the division title all month, but still haven't been able to pull it together. If Cincinnati or....(sigh) Pittsburgh ends up winning the division, Ravens fans will never hear the end of it. " -
Hoyas: A Deeper Bench<p>It's still very early in the season for Georgetown, so if the Hoyas are hoping to make a deep run into March, their young guys are going to have to start shouldering some of the burden.</p> <p>"Going only seven-deep and playing studs Otto Porter and Greg Whittington extended minutes is not ideal for the rigorous Big East schedule." <strong>-Ben Standig,</strong> <em>CSNwashington.com </em></p> -
DCU: A Shiny New StadiumSince the team's inception in 1996, a new, soccer-specific home has been #1 on D.C. United's wish list. Almost two decades later, United is still stuck in the half-century-year-old former home of the Redskins. "Without question this should have happened long ago. D.C. United set the standard for so many things in Major League Soccer. The league is thriving today in large part because of United's passionate support that matched its jammed trophy case. Support that has never wavered even through difficult times. D.C. United has proudly represented the nation's capital on a world stage--soccer is the world's game---and is deserving of a facility to match its first class standing." -Dave Johnson, CSN -
Virginia Tech: An SEC InviteConference realignment: everyone is doing. "The SEC is the be-all, end-all in college football right now, and seeing the Hokies become a part of that elite conference would cause widespread joy and excitement throughout Hokie Nation," explains John Iezzi from VTscoop.com "Would Tech struggle with the competition level in the beginning? Absolutely. But it would end the days of elite prospects leaving the state of Virginia to play in the SEC. The SEC would force Virginia Tech’s football program to become stronger as a whole. No more excuses. No more hiding behind wins against low-level ACC competition. I can’t think of a better gift over the holiday season." -
Orioles: A Few New Contracts<p>The Orioles are coming off their most successful season in 15 years and they did it without the aid of a star-studded roster. Could a big-name hitter be on the wish list this season?</p> <div> <p>"Orioles fans would love a middle of the order hitter, by trade, by free agent, by anything. They're not picky. They just want that big bat under the tree."</p> </div> <div><strong>Stocking Stuffer:</strong> A New Contract for Buck</div> <div>"For fans who are happy Buck Showalter is managing, they'd like to keep him around. How about a two or three-year extension for Uncle Buck?" -<em>Rich Dubroff,</em> <em>CSNbaltimore.com</em></div> -
A new contract for LaRoche"Adam LaRoche has been at the top of the Nats' wish list since the day after the season ended. Nothing has changed since, but Mike Rizzo may have to increase his offer to include a third year if he wants to guarantee LaRoche's return." -Mark Zuckerman, NatsInsider.com Stocking stuffer: A Left-Handed Reliever "The Nats have let Sean Burnett go to the Angels and Tom Gorzelanny and Michael Gonzalez remain unsigned, leaving them in need of several left-handed relief pitchers. Mike Rizzo will fill those roles, but they may drag on into the New Year before the bullpen is completely settled." -
Redskins: A Ticket to the Playoffs"The Redskins have been infrequent playoff participants for the past two decades so playing in January would truly be a holiday gift to remember. Not since 2007 have they played past the end of the regular season and, every year, their hopes have been dashed before Thanksgiving. The team, and especially its fans, would enjoy a string of meaningful Sundays leading up to clinching an invitation to get on the road to the Super Bowl. And, as we have seen in recent years, once you're in it anyone can win it." Stocking stuffer: Beating the Cowboys "Redskins v. Cowboys is without question one of the most storied rivalries in NFL history. In the 70's, 80's and into the 90's you could argue it was the best. True rivalries usually require both teams to be very good, which has not always been the case the last several years on both sides. Nonetheless, there is always animosity in this match up, which usually leads to dramatic and entertaining games. Thanksgiving Day this year was no exception and next Sunday's game, with a lot at stake for both teams, will be one of the most anticipated games in the last 20 years of the rivalry." -Joe Yasharoff, CSN
