George Mason Athletic Director Tom O’Connor announced on Friday that men’s basketball junior Erik Copes has been suspended for six games for violation of athletic department policy.

Copes and teammate Vaughn Gray were suspended for the first three games last season for student-athlete conduct violations. Copes is practicing with the team, but will not travel with the team, the school announced in a statement. He will be eligible to return against Rhode Island on November 30.

The 6-foot-8 forward/center averaged 5.9 points and led the Patriots in rebounds (6.0) and blocks (1.1) while making 34 starts.

Returning the bulk of last season's squad that won 22 games and reached the CBI finals, George Mason enters the 2013-14 campaign as a first-year member of the Atlantic 10 conference. The A10 media predicted an eighth place finish for the Patriots in a preseason poll.
