Auburn quarterback Nick Marshall will not start Week 1 against Arkansas after being cited for marijuana possession last month, head coach Gus Malzahn announced Friday.
Marshall had a breakout 2013 season with over 1900 yards passing and 26 total touchdowns, helping Auburn win an SEC title and earn a berth in the BCS National Title game.
Though he will not start, Marshall is expected to play against Arkansas. The only question is when. Malzahn would not specify how long Marshall would be benched.
The Tigers will turn to true sophomore quarterback Jeremy Johnson to lead them in Marshall’s absence, however long that may be. Johnson threw for 422 yards and six touchdowns in his five appearances last season.
In addition to Marshall, cornerback Jonathon Mincy will also play but not start the opener due to his June arrest for marijuana possession. He totaled 56 tackles and one interception in 2013.
Malzahn also announced on Friday that starting left guard Alex Kozan will miss the entire 2014 season after undergoing back surgery. Kozan was named to the Outland Trophy Watch List prior to the season.
