Virginia beats Army 2-1 in pitchers' dual

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) -- Brandon Waddell and Kyle Crockett combined on a five-hitter and Virginia opened the NCAA tournament with a 2-1 victory against Army.

Waddell (6-2) allowed three hits and a run in seven innings while striking out eight. Crockett finished for his 11th save, striking out the side in the ninth.

The Cavaliers trailed 1-0 entering the bottom of the fifth when Kelly Towns doubled and Nate Irving singled. Mike Papi tied it with a single to right-center, and Joe McCarthy followed a walk with one of his three hits to put the Cavaliers ahead against Black Knights' ace Chris Rowley (9-4).

Rowley has lost just five games over the last two seasons, two against Virginia in the NCAA tournament.

The Black Knights' run came in the fifth when Jacob Page singled, took third on a sacrifice and single by Michael Sands and scored on Grant Van Orden's squeeze bunt.

UConn tops Virginia Tech 5-2

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) -- First baseman Bobby Melley had four hits and an RBI to lift the Connecticut Huskies to a 5-2 victory over Virginia Tech in an NCAA Blacksburg Regional game on Friday.

The Huskies (35-26) had 16 hits -- all singles. UConn scored three runs in the fifth inning to take a 4-0 lead, and starting pitcher Carson Cross and the UConn bullpen made it stand.

UConn will play Oklahoma on Saturday. The Sooners beat Coastal Carolina 7-3.

Cross (9-4) went 6 1-3 innings, giving up six hits and one run. He walked three and struck out three.

Leading 1-0, the Huskies got an RBI single by LJ Mazzilli and then scored two runs with two outs in the fifth. Melley's single to right scored Billy Ferriter, and Mazzilli scored on a throwing error by Virginia Tech catcher Chad Morgan.

The Hokies (38-21) had runners at second and third with two outs in the ninth inning. But Mark Zagunis struck out to end the game.

Richardson, Wimmer propel Liberty past Clemson 8-3

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Catcher Trey Wimmer drove in six runs, starter Josh Richardson scattered six hits and Liberty won its first NCAA tournament game in 13 years with an 8-3 victory over Clemson to start the Columbia Regional.

Wimmer is a South Carolina native who grew up a Tiger fan. Yet he battered his old favorites with a three-run homer and a two-run double for the Flames (35-27), who've won six straight this postseason, taking the Big South tournament title.

The Tigers (39-21) went cold in the middle innings as Richardson retired 17 straight batters, a string that ended with Steven Duggar's leadoff double in the ninth. Clemson has lost six straight games and needs to win an elimination game Saturday to keep going.

Liberty's last NCAA victory came at South Carolina's defunct Sarge Frye Field in 2000 when Flames coach Jim Toman was an assistant coach for the Gamecocks.
