Hokies roll behind Burke's gem
BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Devin Burke of Virginia Tech pitched a five-hit, complete game and the Hokies beat Coastal Carolina 9-1 in an NCAA regional ame.
Mark Zagunis and Andrew Rash each drove in three runs to help the Hokies (39-21), who already have one loss in the double-elimination tournament. Coastal Carolina (37-23) was eliminated.
Burke (11-3) pitched his second complete game of the season, allowing a home run to Jacob May in the ninth inning. He struck out two and walked two in winning his sixth straight decision.
Rash and Chad Pinder each hit solo homers for Virginia Tech. The Hokies broke open the game with a five-run ninth, highlighted by Zagunis' two-run single and Rash's two-run double.
Coastal Carolina's Ben Smith went 6 1/3 innings and gave up two runs.
Virginia blanks Elon 2-0 behind solid Silverstein
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) -- Scott Silverstein and two relievers scattered eight hits and Virginia beat Elon 2-0 on Saturday to move within one victory of advancing to the super regionals of the NCAA tournament.
Silverstein (10-1) allowed six hits in six innings, striking out six and walking two, before Josh Sborz worked the seventh and Kyle Crockett finished for his 12th save. Spencer Medick (7-7) went all the way for the Phoenix, allowing nine hits.
Virginia scored in the fourth when Nick Howard singled, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and scored on Kelly Towns' double. Nate Irving's single made it 2-0, and the Cavaliers pitchers made it stand up.
Silverstein stranded two runners three times, and Crockett allowed a one-out single in the ninth, but struck out Chris Bresnahan and pinch-hitter Tyler McVicar to end it.
Elon will play UNC Wilmington in an elimination game Sunday, with the winner facing Virginia.
Rodon tosses 2-hitter as NC State tops W&M 1-0
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Carlos Rodon threw a two-hitter and North Carolina State beat William & Mary 1-0 on Saturday night in the Raleigh regional.
The hard-throwing lefty struck out 10, walked none and hit three batters while moving the top-seeded Wolfpack (46-14) within one victory of a second straight trip to the super regionals.
Rodon (9-2), a sophomore who allowed one hit in 11 innings against North Carolina last week in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament, threw 81 of his 111 pitches for strikes and hit 94 mph with his fastball.
The third-seeded Tribe (38-23) managed only two two-out singles -- one by William Shaw in the sixth and another by Ryan Brown in the eighth.
Grant Clyde drove in the game's only run with a sixth-inning single off John Farrell. Trea Turner finished with two hits for the Wolfpack.
Farrell (11-3) struck out six in 7 1-3 innings for William & Mary.
Montgomery, SCarolina bats defeat Liberty 19-3
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Jordan Montgomery had a career-high 11 strikeouts in seven innings, Kyle Martin drove in four runs and South Carolina took control of the Columbia regional with a 19-3 victory over Liberty on Saturday night.
The Gamecocks (41-18) set a school record for runs in an NCAA game and took their 26th straight tournament home win. They try for No. 27 -- and the regional title -- on Sunday night against Liberty or Clemson.
The Flames (35-28) face the Tigers (40-21) in an elimination game to start Sunday's play. That winner would have to beat the Gamecocks (41-18) twice at Carolina Stadium -- something no one's done in the postseason since 2002.
South Carolina turned up its offense with home runs by Martin, Tanner English and Max Schrock. Not that they needed them all with the way Montgomery (5-1) threw as he retired 18 of the last 19 hitters he faced.
