San Jose State will accept a bid and play at RFK Stadium on Dec. 27, a source close to the negotiations told CSNwashington. The formal announcement could come by Friday afternoon.
The Spartans (10-2, 5-1 WAC), ranked 25th in the current BCS standings and 26th in the latest Associated Press poll, would be the highest BCS ranked program to play in the bowl's five-year history. San Jose State's opponent will be determined following this weekend's games.
The Military Bowl was projected to have the No. 8 selection among ACC programs, but the conference has only six eligible bowl teams. The bowl also had an agreement in place with Army, but the Black Knights' record stands at 2-9 entering the annual season finale against Navy.
With its post-Thanksgiving victory over Louisiana Tech, San Jose State won 10 games in a season for the first time since 1987. The Spartans resume includes a current six-game winning streak and victories over Brigham Young, Navy and Colorado State after opening the season with a three-point loss at No. 21 Stanford.
In the 2011 Military Bowl, Toledo downed Air Force 42-41. Maryland, one of two ACC teams to participate in the Nation Capital's only bowl game, claimed victory over East Carolina in 2010. Navy lost the inaugural matchup, then called the Eagle Bank Bowl, to Wake Forest in 2008.
