University of Virginia head coach Mike London announced today that sophomore quarterback Phillip Sims has been declared ineligible and is no longer enrolled at the university. Sims, who is a Chesapeake, Va. native, played his only season with the Cavaliers in 2012 after transferring from Alabama in the summer.

Last season, Sims played in all 12 games and started four times as the Cavaliers struggled to a 4-8 record. Sims completed 132 of his 231 passes for 1,426 yards and threw nine touchdowns with four interceptions.

“The thing we tell the young men who come to the University of Virginia to receive a world-class education and play for our football program is pretty simple,” said London.  "Phillip Sims did not make the commitment he needed to succeed here," stated London.

Sims was favored to win the starting position for the 2013 season, but began spring practice as No. 3 on the depth chart and never moved up. "I still believe Phillip Sims can and will be a successful person," said London.

"We will do what we can to assist Phillip in continuing his academic and athletic opportunities elsewhere."
