Nobody really cares about the punter until he makes a mistake.

The Redskins' Sav Rocca handles the vast majority of his chances flawlessly last year. But he had some ill-timed shanks, including one in Denver in the second half of a game where the Redskins had a chance to pull off a huge, season changing upset. The mistakes and his salary cap number in excess of $1 million cost him his job. He was released in March.

Bruce Allen and Jay Gruden have decided to go younger and cheaper at the position. Robert Malone, 26, and Blake Clingan, 25, are set to compete for the job. But Malone has minimal experience punting and he was let go by the Jets last year. Clingan's next NFL punt will be his first.

These are not the only two options. The team could opt to hit the free agent market if they get a game or two into the preseason and don't like what they have. Veterans Zoltan Mesko and Mat McBriar are free agents. In fact, Rocca is a free agent and rumor has it that he's living in Ashburn waiting for the call to return to Redskins Park.

How to do you think it will play out? Will the Redskins find their punter from one of the two who is on the roster currently? Or will someone Mesko, McBriar, or another punter who is currently a free agent end up in deep punt formation when the Redskins take on the Texans on Sept. 7?
