Mike Shanahan came close to possibly returning to Redskins Park this year.
Grant Paulsen of 106.7 The Fan said on the air that he ran in to FOX play-by-play man Dick Stockton in an airport on Monday. Paulsen asked who Stockton would be paired with in the broadcast booth this year.
“I was supposed to be working with Mike Shanahan, but it doesn’t sound like he wants to do it anymore,” said Stockton, according to Paulsen.
We don’t know how close this really came to happening but it certainly would have created some awkward situations if the Stockton-Shanahan team had been assigned to cover a Redskins game, given the ugly nature of the events leading up to Shanahan’s departure from the team last year.
The three hours in the booth at the stadium would have been one thing. The network broadcast team is given access to the team facility prior to the game and there is a production meeting with the head coach and, yes, the starting quarterback. It’s hard to imagine that Griffin would give Shanahan much in the way of useful insight during that meeting.
