Despite an off year both individually and for his team, RG3 still sells.
The NFL Players Association has announced the top 50 player sales list for the 2013-2014 fiscal year and they key to topping the list was apparent—quarterback your team in the Super Bowl.
Jersey sales are one of the biggest components in the list but according to the NFLPA press release the rankings includes sales of “t-shirts, player murals, figurines, matted and framed photos, bobbleheads, drinkware, jewelry, electronic device accessories, among others.”
Robert Griffin III, who topped the jersey sales rankings as a rookie, was fourth on this list. Ahead of him were the two Super Bowl quarterbacks, Russell Wilson of the Seahawks and Peyton Manning of the Broncos, and Colin Kaepernick, who quarterbacked the 49ers in last year’s Super Bowl.
Griffin remained a top seller despite that fact that his play in 2013 declined considerably from his rookie of the year performance in 2012 as he struggled to recover from a knee injury. The team’s fortunes also took a dive as the Redskins went from 10-6 and a division title in 2012 to a 3-13 record last year.
Griffin was one of nine quarterbacks in the top 10 on the sales list. Only Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch broke up the QB party at No. 7.
No other Redskins players were on the top 50 list. You can see the complete list here.
