CSN Washington dot com. Talk and college basketball today welcome the lunch box live presented by The Washington Times I'm John -- joined today by Sirius XM's -- -- Also the voice of the American University men's basketball team. And -- you with a big win getting there. First win of the year and it's an important step for them obviously. Anytime but especially this year because it's kind of a transitional year for them. -- the Eagles took to the road the first two games lost at Richmond and that Maryland Eastern Shore. And last night and went with a win over Florida Atlantic as a coach Mike Jarvis of course the former GW at church. And that's a good basketball coach I mean regardless of you know what some other stuff that doesn't happen -- lot of friends who write that's different who works here who attended saint John's if you disagree you vehemently appointment. Please considering -- American picked up a big win over -- you and in doing so. Charles Hinkle -- really came through for American 27 points and also another guy that that they're gonna have to rely on this year is Tony public. And he is that guy and he had seven blocks shots. And he is going to be relied upon a lot more this year than that. Expected because of Stephen Hopkins departure pumpkins that got us to be back again. However he decided to make the transition to baseball and that is Royals back. That is a fascinating story because it's just not something you. You see happening so -- left of eligibility when he decided to take that the offer that was on the table from the Royals who was his mindset there. I think his mindset was just today I can and perhaps haven't I can have a good shot of making a career at this. I get the rest of my college education paid for and have a a shot it and had a career. He's a big guy 68 yeah he is raw as far as baseball terms goes out scouts talk. And hadn't played baseball since high school. And in fact that told Coach Jeff Jones over American baseballs out of my blood -- focused on. Basketball -- so then then -- got the itch to play and played actually in the faster. The wood -- league. And it's got a couple scouts say. Big guy lefty you know. Tools. 6891. Mile an hour fastball good changeup. -- -- -- we can do with a was drafted by the Pirates -- said -- I'm gonna stick with baseball and then -- drafted again this year by Kansas City when it. And it would not be the first time something like this has happened there have been a few basketball players who have gone on to play in the big leagues. I'll Orioles fans are most likely familiar with -- Mark Hendrickson the left hander played a 114 NBA games before becoming a full time. Pitcher he's a rare combination of very tall lefthander with no velocity whatsoever. So not not exactly Randy Johnson but he did have a an NBA career before coming over also Ryan minor. Another former -- took over for cal Ripken after the streak. He was an all American basketball player in Oklahoma -- in the second round by the Philadelphia 76ers now the track record. Based on those guys -- not so great but there are some guys who also played multiple sports and exceed excelled at baseball. That -- you look at Dave Winfield played pretty good qualities he's decent guy. Tony Gwynn but not a lot of people remember that he was drafted by the San Diego Padres and the San Diego Clippers. On the same -- And Tony holds the assist record for a season and for a single game. Four era and four career -- San Diego State. So it's good basketball player good point guard you know and that he decided. Again career wise longevity baseball is is play a little safer bet now he went. Two years as the closer I remember -- to receive the were in interleague series in Pittsburgh and Jorge Julio single handedly ruined my vacation Pittsburgh. By just getting shelled every time he came in. Late in the ball game -- What can you do that's that's for -- -- Only on the show can we start out talking about American University basketball and and out on or equally right that makes this as a great but that's partly. I appreciate that very much and is -- look at it and now winning American. Has at Columbia on the road coming up this week and then back at home on Tuesday against a quinnipiac. So. Not an easy stretch and then of course looking to get into conference play once the year turns over. But it should be an interesting year based on you know again the the transition of sorts and sort of unexpected pieces. I have to come together for this team that came together last night against Florida Atlantic. Didn't come together against Maryland Eastern Shore so I think we're gonna get that with a young team of the team your guys -- try to. Find their way and that's -- say we'll see you know moved forward. And that's the team in college basketball in this area this year Maryland Georgetown both. Young teams rebuilding Maryland new coach George Washington George Mason. New coaches so. American urine good company d'isere earlier the play by play doesn't talking about a lot of the same. Teams this upcoming season deadline as a sports anchor at Sirius -- is also the voice of the American University Eagles you can hear him. On the Jeff Jones shows Saturday afternoons on federal news radio 15100 am appreciate dropping by Serbs -- I'm John -- this is lunch box live presented by The Washington Times.
