Charley Casserly on the ins and outs of the NFL draft
CSN Washington dot com. Sorry Charlie we've all seen the NFL war rooms in the big boards and you have the guys you know you wanna go after you hope they fall to you. As a GM in that room how do you adjust on the fly as guys you think you're gonna get you end up not being there. Well -- have you board divided if two boys who have won by position and they have won by a round. We would be would do we have a pro scouts would have three pro scouts on the fall within the teams in the league. Talking about what's it -- -- to trade up what can we get if we trade back. And what you try to do is get value in each round I'd give you an example. Back in the Champ Bailey draft -- over to pick was a guy named Jon Jansen. Forcing the second round and as those picks are coming off will only get two guys left with second round grades and we still got quite a bit around that lap so we made a decision that. We wanna give value here. So -- that -- one of these two guys in -- who was our first choice who made a trade up to get Jon Jansen. So we got second round value in the second round so that's an example of how you have the -- just. If the board is thinning out you go get him if there's a lot there you move back. We all know how hard football coaches and GM's work during the season Jon Gruden -- here 4 o'clock in the morning. Then you think I would get to the offseason take a little break I don't go out of your -- relax a little bit how much work goes into this draft for the -- the GM the coaches. Well then there's and there's an awful lot of me that the process is almost all who wants a little months long. Because as soon as the draft is over you now start working on next year's class. And so unity of scouts around before looking at I would go out and look at players to. And scout him in the fall and semen all star game as we go to the com mine now in the spring you go back -- -- list and you go back. And do then you gotta interview you got work out you bring people lady that testing. And then you got weeks and weeks of of long meetings so it's a thorough process it really is. Get their money's worth out of view -- Kansas City now they're number one this year in the season where there's no clear cut there's no Andrew Luck there's no RG three. You're the Chiefs GM how do you approach this how many phone calls are you taking what's your third thought process going into the draft. While you wanna see what's available on the trade and with the way the and economics are now these picks don't push a lot of money. -- that's not a deterrent for somebody to trade up but as you pointed out in your question. Did there's not a big difference there you know that there's not a got clear cut number one guy there's not a quarterback he got to turn and go get seat. So they're sitting there with the the dilemma of nobody's probably don't want this pick. So what they've done a great job of is filling their holes in the off season. So they're not in a desperation position in the draft to draft a position they have a lot of leeway. When they sit there make this pick in the rest of their -- When you look at this draft without that clear cut number one guy is there one guy though do you. That jumps out as the best player in the draft. But to me is not a best player in this draft is a number of players that are good players now I think what they gonna end up going and this is part of their positioning in free agency they. Re sign Branden Albert to a one year contract by franchise and he was a left tackle. But in this draft they had to potential starting left tackles -- local Texas and them. And Eric Fisher from central Michigan university and and you buy C Central Michigan University -- this -- legit now. Because if he doesn't go one he's gonna go pretty quick now. I would lean towards Joseph Oakland it's just a slight lean here with the level of competition in the fact that he's younger and he's a chance to grow and get bigger and stronger and develop. In both of them are accomplished pass baucus fresher probably is a slight better athlete in the work out and a little bit of father along as a run blocker. But highlight -- holes potential to bowl but fall on the so -- a local Texas a and M university. All right Kansas City. CSN Washington dot com.
