WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - William and Mary men's basketball sophomore Marcus Thornton was named the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week for the third time this season, the league office announced on Monday. The Upper Marlboro, Md., native averaged 23.3 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game, including a career-high 32 points at Old Dominion on Saturday, while leading the Tribe to a 2-1 record. Thornton shared the weekly award with UNCW senior Keith Rendleman, who averaged 23.5 points and 12 rebounds per game during the week.
Thornton poured in a career-high 32 points in the Tribe's 74-62 win at Old Dominion, becoming the 40th different Tribe player to score 30-plus points in a game. He scored 20 points in the second half as the Green and Gold swept the season series with the Monarchs for the first time since 1998. Thornton's seven 3-pointers tied for the fourth-best single-game total in school history, and he connected on 11-of-12 from the charity stripe, including a perfect 8-of-8 over the final 2:30 to put the game on ice.
For the year, Thornton ranks second in the CAA and 31st nationally in scoring at 18.8 points per game. His 3.1 3-pointers per game and 43 percent shooting from long-range lead the CAA and are rated nationally at No. 12 and No. 22, respectively. He has scored in double digits in 27-straight games dating back to last season, including 11 games of 20-plus points this season.
Thornton and the Tribe return to action tonight when they host Georgia State. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. at Kaplan Arena.
