SECOND-ANNUAL SPECIAL TO FOLLOW 21ST COMPANY PLEBES DURING THIS YEAR’S NAVAL ACADEMY ENDURANCE CHALLENGE
Bethesda, Md. (June 26, 2014) – Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic will premiere The 2014 Sea Trials, presented by Select Auto Imports, a one-hour documentary on the U.S. Naval Academy’s annual Sea Trials training exercise for fourth class midshipmen (plebes), on Sunday, June 29, at 8 p.m. The network’s second-annual Sea Trials special, narrated by NBC Sports’ Josh Elliott, will also be available to military service members stationed overseas on American Forces Network.
The 2014 Sea Trials will provide a comprehensive account of the day-long series of rigorous physical and mental challenges designed to test teamwork and reinforce the bonds of the plebe class at the conclusion of their first year in May. The 2014 Sea Trials will focus on Class of 2017 participants from the 21st Company. Their experiences surrounding the Sea Trials, as well as their unique personal stories, will be featured throughout the program.
The 2014 Sea Trials will also provide insight on the activities that are part of the Sea Trials, which is modeled after the Marine Corps’ Crucible and Navy’s Battle Stations recruit programs. Beginning at the event’s 3 a.m. start, the program will highlight each challenge throughout the day as they are completed, which includes obstacle courses and tactical exercises. Naval Academy upperclassmen, who lead Sea Trials as a leadership challenge, and other personnel will be introduced throughout the program to provide information on the activities and events.
The 2014 Sea Trials will also cover this year’s Herndon Monument climb. The historic event features approximately 1,000 plebes attempting to climb the Naval Academy’s Herndon Monument, a 21-foot obelisk that has been covered in lard, to replace the plebe hat at the top with an upperclassman hat. The event serves as the traditional end of the plebe year.
Produced by Comcast SportsNet, The 2014 Sea Trials will also be presented as an encore multiple times, including July 2 at 9 p.m., July 4 at 4:30 p.m., July 5 at 2 p.m. and July 8 at 7 p.m. The program will also be offered On-Demand, where available, following the Sunday premiere.
