Should Nene continue to come off the bench?

The Wizards acquired Marcin Gortat days before the regular season tipped.

The Mavericks tried acquiring the center five years ago.

"Gortat is a guy we've always liked," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said before the Wizards and Mavericks tipped at 6 p.m. from the Verizon Center. "We signed him to an offer sheet five years ago. Orlando matched. One of things that we thought he could do was be an effective mid-range shooter in this league and he is. He's become that."

Dallas signed Gortat to a five-year, $34 million dollar contract in July 2009 only for the Magic to eventually match. He's playing out the final year of that contract with the Wizards.

Washington's fifth-leading scorer at 12.6 points per game, Gortat's ability to make shots away from the basket combined with his willingness to bang has made him a dangerous pick-and-roll partner with John Wall.

"It's a tough situation to deal with because of Wall's quickness. Now he's shooting the mid-range shot and he's shooting 3's at times behind screens," said Carlisle, who deploys a center-by-committee approach. Samuel Dalembert, Brandan Wright and DeJuan Blair will take turns in the middle against Gortat and Nene.

"One of things tonight which is key is we got take away [Gortat's] own 14-16 foot shots. But they're tough. It's tough when they put Gortat in [pick-and-rolls]. It's tough when they put Nene in it. Nene can shoot too. Put a big guy in and deal with one of the quickest guys in the game.
