Something I learned following Marcin Gortat's press conference on Thursday: People really want to know what's the deal with that pig the big man took a picture with last month.
Something I learned during Marcin Gortat's press conference: Marcin Gortat already knew that.
After the pertinent questions were asked about the center's new contract with the Washington Wizards including the reasons both sides wanted to stay together, it came time to ask about the lighthearted if not sillier moments of Gortat's off-season.
I proceeded to ask about a picture of Gortat and Wizards teammate Chris Singleton in Poland riding around in a tank. (More on this later, but essentially Gortat and pals played the Polish Army in a charity basketball game. The Army "brought a few toys," Gortat cracked).
"Is the second question going to be about the pig," he responded, breaking the otherwise church mouse quiet room into laughter. Gortat's mention referred to this picture taken in Poland.
Gortat answered the tank question and honestly, after the 16-plus minute interaction, my mind went to what I needed to write rather than what else there was to ask. Apparently the others in the room felt the same since the press conference ended (or the other reporters were waiting for me to ask about the pig. Of course, they didn't even ask about the tank, so...)
After noticing that folks I followed on my Twitter timeline were not so happy with the lack of a follow-up, I went with another reporter to find Gortat and get to the bottom of his pig tale. Here is the story:
"I was just in a shopping center where I picking up my basketball shoes," Gortat explained. "I was standing in front of a store and looking downstairs, kind of one floor lower. There was a small charity event, people raising money for animals. They brought a pig into the shopping center. For the first five minutes, I couldn't believe it's a pig. I was standing there and I was like, 'Lord, I think I'm getting sick or something. I don't believe it's a pig.' I had to call my friend and he came over and was like, 'yeah, that's a pig. Seriously, what the hell is a pig doing here in the shopping center.
"We actually came up with the idea to take a picture and put it up on Instagram. It's going to make a lot of noise. I donated like $30 and took a pig on a leash. It was actually a pretty strong pig, I'm telling you. He almost pulled my arm out of shoulder. We took a few pictures and posted it on Instagram.
"We do different things in Poland."
That Gortat, what a ham.
