Seemingly every NBA team covets a stretch-4 in this 3-point shooting heavy era. With John Wall running the attack and coach Randy Wittman having shooters set up in the corners and elsewhere for open looks beyond the arc, the Wizards are no exception.
Last season Al Harrington helped in that role, but he also missed significant time with injury and is now uncertain to return. Drew Gooden showed surprising range when he arrived, but it's a stretch to view him in such a role. Regardless, with so many of the big men set to enter free agency, Washington needs interior depth.
Free agent: PF Channing Frye, Phoenix Suns. Unrestricted.
2013-14 salary: $6.4 million
Vitals: 6'11", 248 pounds. 31 years old.
Career averages: 9.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1.0 assists, 44.3% FG, 38.5% 3FG. Last season: 11.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 43.2% FG, 37.0% 3FG
The fit: If Martians landed in NBA country and demanded video of a prototype stretch-4, we'd show them clips of Frye. Not only can the eight-year veteran drain one 3-ball after another, he's worthy on the defensive end against interior bigs. Frye missed the 2012-13 season due to an enlarged heart, but played all 82 games for the resurgent Suns last season. The lengthy forward would make for an intriguing inside-outside combo when paired with Nene or Marcin Gortat, not to mention as one of Wall's passing targets. In two games versus Washington last season, Frye made 6 of 13 3's and averaged 13 points.
Chances of becoming a Wizard: Frye only joined the list of free agent candidates on Monday after he exercised his player option. Due to make $6.8 million next season, he'll now seek a longer-term deal. Indications are that Phoenix wants to keep the former University of Arizona product. Should Frye truly allow other teams to make pitches, Washington would have to consider making one, especially if they let Trevor Ariza depart. Not that the two forwards are the same player or even play the same position. However, Frye could provide the Wizards with a similar 3-point shooting element and do so at a position of need while allowing Martell Webster and Otto Porter to operate at small forward.
