The Milt Newton rumors are back.

In late May, a report surfaced that Newton, the Wizards vice president of player personnel, was considered a strong candidate for the Minnesota Timberwolves general manager position.

However, as of last month, the Timberwolves had not yet asked for permission to speak with the D.C. native, who has been with the Wizards organization since 2003. In that stretch, Newton worked with former Wizards coach Flip Saunders, now Minnesota's team president.

Apparently Minnesota has now not only asked to interview Newton, but did so this week, ESPN's Marc Stein reported on Sunday.

Earlier this offseason, director of player personnel Pat Connelly left for a front office job with the Phoenix Suns. Assistant coach Jerry Sichting also left for Phoenix, replaced on Randy Wittman's bench by former scout Pat Sullivan.
