Game of the Day: Switzerland vs. France, 3 p.m. ET (ESPN)
Switzerland used a 93rd minute goal to complete their comeback win against Ecuador in their opening game. Both of their subs, Admir Mehmedi and Haris Seferovic, scored the goals with Seferovic coming late in the game to save the Swiss. Enner Valencia, no relation to the more talented Antonio, scored an early goal to give the Ecuadorians a surprise lead. In fitting fashion with the rest of the tournament, after the favorite were shocked in the first half they came back in the second. Unfortunately for the Swiss, they won't be the favorite in their second game against France, despite being the seeded team.
France pummeled Honduras in their first game after they got off to a slow start, but a red card to Wilson Palacios in the 43rd minute changed the entire outlook and France took full advantage. France's 4-3-3 was able to dominate the midfield and create opportunities for Karim Benzema, Antoine Greizmann and Mathieu Valbuena. Switzerland won't try to ugly it up like France, so this game should be wide open.
Player of the Day: MF Andrea Pirlo, Italy
The elder statesmen of the Italian outfield players, and midfield maestro, completed 96 percent of his passes against England in Italy's opening game. Pirlo may not be a goal scoring threat from the run of play, but he puts on a clinic on how to take a free kick and put it on frame. At some point, he's going to connect perfectly and score a ridiculous free kick. I can't wait and hope it's soon.
Best of the Rest: Honduras and Ecuador face off in the late game on Friday. Let's all hope for all that is good and holy that Honduras don't try to ugly it up. Ecuador are the favorite in the game, and hopefully they take it to Honduras -- unlike Japan against Greece.
Day 8 rewind: Uruguay and England played a great game in the afternoon on Thursday, and Uruguay managed to win the slugfest and improve their odds of advancing. Costa Rica still hold the upper hand, but it looks like no matter what England will be headed home before the knockout round.
Colombia got by Ivory Coast in the early game and even the great Drogba couldn't rescue the Ivorians late, although they did score again when he was on the pitch. That makes three goals while Drogba is on the pitch and zero with him off it. I'll keep doing the math until this decision to not start him makes sense. Wish me luck.
The late game of Japan-Greece was as boring as humanly possible because Greece. They are boring and play ugly. They got a deserved red card and Japan should have taken advantage, but didn't.
