Offensive lineman Brent Benedict will not play in his final year for Virginia Tech due to an unspecified medical condition, the team announced Monday.

Benedict will take a medical hardship and will remain on scholarship, but will not count against the team’s scholarship totals.

“Brent Benedict has been a great teammate at Virginia Tech, and we will miss his toughness,” Frank Beamer said in a statement released by the school. “We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors, and he will always be a Hokie.”

According to 247Sports, Benedict experienced blood clotting issues that arose from a knee injury he suffered last spring.

The senior from Jacksonville Fla. originally signed with Georgia, but transferred to Virginia Tech in 2011. He played in 11 games last season for the Hokies and started in seven of them.
