Among the revelations in the just released Atlantic 10 men's basketball schedule for 2013-14, the George's will become well acquainted in their first year as conference foes.
In its first season with the A10, George Mason will play two regular season games against fellow D.C. area school George Washington, one of four teams the Patriots will face home and away along with Saint Louis, Massachusetts and Duquesne. Saint Louis, the defending A10 regular season champion, and UMass are among the early conference favorites along with VCU.
Speaking of the Rams, the Patriots will meet former CAA rivals Richmond and VCU only once in the regular season. Besides hosting Richmond at the Patriot Center, George Mason will matchup with Dayton, Saint Bonaventure and Saint Joseph's in Fairfax while its road-only games are at VCU, Fordham, LaSalle and Rhode Island.
In addition to George Mason, the Colonials have home-and-home series against VCU, LaSalle and Fordham along with home-only games against Duquesne, Saint Joseph's, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Coach Mike Lonergan's squad will only face Dayton, Richmond, Saint Bonaventure and Saint Louis on the road.
The Patriots return nine of their top-10 scorers from last season's 22-16 squad including guard Sherrod Wright (16.5 ppg) and center Erik Copes (team-high 6.0 rebounds). Copes initially committed to George Washington as a recruit before signing with George Mason.
George Washington (13-17, 7-9) returns five starters, including shot blocking big man Isaiah Armwood and four rising sophomores that started a combined. The Colonials added former Indiana transfer Maurice Creek earlier this month.
